About Hajj
Hajj, the annual Islamic pilgrimage to Makkah, Saudi Arabia, is one of the five pillars of Islam. It is a mandatory religious duty for all adult Muslims who are physically and financially capable of undertaking the journey, at least once in their lifetime. The Hajj occurs from the 8th to the 12th of Dhu al-Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic calendar.
Millions of Muslims from diverse backgrounds gather to perform a series of sacred rituals, retracing the footsteps of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and his family. Hajj symbolizes unity, submission to Allah (ﷻ), and the spiritual peak of a Muslim's life, offering an opportunity for forgiveness and profound connection with the divine.
Key Rites and Locations of Hajj
- Ihram: The sacred state of ritual purity a pilgrim enters before beginning Hajj, involving specific attire and an intention to perform the pilgrimage.
- Tawaf al-Qudum & Sa'i: The initial circumambulation of the Kaaba upon arrival in Makkah, followed by walking seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah, commemorating Hajar's (AS) devoted search for water for her son, Isma'il (AS).
- Day of Arafah (Yawm al-Arafah): The most crucial day of Hajj, spent in worship and supplication on the plains of Arafat, where Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) delivered his Farewell Sermon.
- Muzdalifah: After sunset on the Day of Arafah, pilgrims proceed to Muzdalifah to spend the night under the open sky and gather pebbles for the Stoning of the Jamarat.
- Mina (Stoning of the Jamarat): Pilgrims throw pebbles at three pillars representing the devil, symbolizing Prophet Ibrahim's (AS) rejection of temptation. This is also where the sacrifice (Qurbani) takes place.
- Tawaf al-Ifadah & Tawaf al-Wada: Further circumambulations of the Kaaba, with Tawaf al-Ifadah being an essential rite of Hajj and Tawaf al-Wada being the farewell Tawaf before leaving Makkah.
Virtues and Significance of Hajj in Hadith
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Whoever performs Hajj for Allah's pleasure and does not have sexual relations with his wife, and does not do evil or sins, then he will return (after Hajj free from all sins) as if he were born anew.”

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “(The performance of) ʿUmrah is an expiation for the sins committed (between it and the previous one). And the reward of Hajj Mabrur (the one accepted by Allah) is nothing except Paradise.”
